Diverse makes Rainbows...
Hey everyone,
This is a reminder that issue 251 August issue of ASL is hitting shelves right now and has that bizarre double page editorial shot of me doing an air with a rainbow in it caused by the off shore breeze blowing heaps of spray into the air.
I've been keeping in touch with ASL on Facebook and they told me on Friday that they had just got the first issues into their office at Burleigh and I could come and grab one. So I bolted over there straight after work. It was good to see all the guys and Sheildsy (the photographer who took the shot) just happened to be in there too and we shared the story with them of how as soon as he snapped it he had a look at it on his camera and was yelling to me how there was a rainbow in it!
The guys gave me 3 issues and a pair of celebratory 250th issue boardies featuring all the best cover shots on them. And ofcourse it was cool to hang out for a bit and talk about a few different things, mostly about what's been happening currently in air surfing. They were interested in my opinions about the winning air of the Kustom Space Kadets comp (an annual comp were the best air captured on video wins $50,000) etc.
So be sure to check it out. I'm over the moon... or should I say rainbow.
Dru.

Another Day In Paradise!
Ok... Sure is fun to travel to other tropical countries with waves to make boards... Here is how todays work on location in Bali went. i went to sleep last night with the knowledge the the broken part on the shaping machine had arrived and would be in operation first thing in the morning. therefore i would be able to start early and get about 10 boards shaped today. Great, i go home to Oz on friday, thats just enough time to comfortably be able to finish them all and deliver them b4 i go. zzzz zzzz Wake up at 7 am, packing all the orders forms i had completed the day before. i Opened the packet of new logos i had printed in Australia b4 i left. they are a special logo made for Indonesia to help us all know where your board is made. mmm nice new Rail logo... but lo and behold no main DIVERSE logo? what the! thats right the printing company had left them out... maybe i should have opened the packet b4 i left! but after dealing with that company for 15-20 years you kind of get a little lazy.. ok 8am the breakfast is down the hatch, im off to the printers over here to get a quick batch of make-do logos done. They are open, but the man who knows my job is not in till 9am.! right on time, he says ok, we dont have that paper here sorry. Well lets try an alternative then, so we feed it into a printer.... jam! no go. ok lets try the good laser printer it should work he says! oh sorry this computer just got formatted we have to install the drivers..... lets find the cd. mmm that guys not here yet... oh here he is... install. load paper. print... JAM! ok sir we can screen print for you. please come back toomorow morning at 10am! sheesh pretty quick for screen printing, ok sir thanks, thats the best you can do. Off to the factory thinking i can shape them all still and pick up the logos in the morning to glass them toomorow.. no biggie! get to the factory.. The parts didnt come, the guy flight comes in at 3pm this arvo now! Ok gonna be tight, i will do some shapes tonight. My family are not here to go home too, i dont mind working at night here, its cooler too! While im waiting i go to the wood factory up the road and but some timber to make an Alaia i promised the boys over here. Sweet! all good, fired up the old planer and hacked away wishing i had earmuffs and did it at night too. it was 34 degrees and 99% humidity! out with the sander and the 60 grit. nice finished in 2 hours. a bit rougher than what i make at home but nice to have some fun with! Well while im waiting for the Shaping Machine parts, i thought i better go collect some money owed to me for a board from one shop. Hello is the boss here? oh no sir he has gone to lunch, back in 30 minutes. cool ill just check my emails while im waiting in the air conditioning. oh the wireless password is? oh dont know. the guy who does that is on lunch too! ok here comes the boss, Sure we owe you x,xxx, xxxIDR. but the girl who does the money just left for the day, come back toomorow !
ok Quick email check at hotel then back to factory... parts arrived time to test it.. no go, test, no go... fiddle with wire, no go, test no go, support call at $7 per minute.. test no go, ewiggle test no go, swear turn off .. test no go etc etc. 7pm. time to go home 40 minutes of ball tearing motorcycle riding in traffic down the same road for the 6th time today... a quck shower and im writing this Email as the low battery warning is coming on on my computer and the lightning is signalling an impending storm probaly putting the power out briefly again!.. mmm better save and send real quick huh! see yas all toomorow! gonna be a good day! |

Today was day 1 of the annual waves board test. This time its on location in Bali. i was on hand to see how the guys go & was really interested to see how Rusty team rider Marlon Gerber liked my Sprint model i shaped for the test. the board is a 6'2"x18 1/4x 2 3/16" ds just like we have on our shop shelf at Tugun. I was impressed how natural Marlon looked riding the board! he was digging the board too commenting how little effort it took to do anything he wanted. The waves were a fun 2-3 foot at Canggu.

11 May, 2009 Kuta-Bali: At just before 6:00 pm on Saturday May 9 at Kuta Beach in Bali, over 80 surfers paddled out at Kuta Beach to honor the life, spirit, and contributions of Kim “Fly” Bradley by sprinkling his ashes into the sea surrounding his beloved island. It would have been his 54th birthday.
Smaller groups performed similar paddle outs at Bradley’s favorite surfing beaches around the island: Nusa Dua, Sanur, and Padang-Padang Beach (near Uluwatu).
Later that evening in Kuta, friends and family gathered for a wake at his favorite watering hole, Tubes Bar on Poppies 2. Bradley and fellow Aussie Steve Palmer created the world famous wave at Tubes, where thousands have been photographed over the years perched atop a surfboard hovering just under the concrete lip. With food, drink, and many of Bradley’s photos and surfboards on display, stories were swapped and old times revived while “Morning of the Earth” played on the big screen, in a fitting memoriam to this Bali legend.
Bradley, an Australian expat from the Sydney area, passed away just a few weeks ago on Nyepi Day (the Balinese annual Day of Silence) March 26th at his house on the hill above Jimbaran, overlooking the airport and the reef breaks of Kuta. Though he had been battling skin cancer for many years, it was reported that a failed liver is what ended his time in Bali.
Nicknamed “Fly” by the older surfers when he was a youngster, learning to surf in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Bradley left a job at Tracks Magazine in 1974 for a trip to Bali, inspired by Albie Falzon’s classic surf film “Morning of the Earth”, a film with intriguing scenes of Bali’s epic waves. Subsequently, he spent the rest of his life living in Bali.
Bradley’s extraordinary surfing ability made him a standout out on the island’s most difficult waves, and along with both his talent for making surfboards and friends, he soon helped to organize the first surfing competition in Bali. The Indonesian surf scene as it is today owes its very existence to “Fly”.
On April 29th, 2009, Bradley received a full Balinese funeral (called a nyaben) on the sands of Kuta Beach at the Asem Celagi cemetery near the Kartika Discovery Mall. His body was cremated in the traditional Balinese manner with hundreds of local Balinese and Western friends and family attending. Bradley had converted to Balinese Hinduism with his marriage to Ni Made Ringan in 1982, and is survived daughter Dewi (25) sons Adi (20) and 18 month old Genghis.
Special thanks to Coca-Cola Bottling Indonesia for supplying Coke Zero, to Billabong Indonesia for making the T-shirts, to Mick Curley for padding out with a camera, and to everyone that came out to join in the event to show their respect for Kim “Fly” Bradley.

Hey Dave
How's it going?
Here's the round up from all the East Coast surf we got last week.
That's me on the backhand on the first shot of the Sleeping Giant Awakes! i'm on the 6'8" turbo and it went unreal.
It's a shame the shot was taken in the arvo when the swell backed off a little and the wind came up a bit.
But hey there were only 3 of us out and was still heaps of fun.
Got a couple more orders coming through this week apparently so you'll here from me soon.
Keep those boards coming
