Lighthouse Beach Fires to Life for Day Four of Australian Open Surfmasters Titles
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 August, 2010 : - - Lighthouse Beach fired to life for day four of the Australian Open Surfmasters Titles, with barrelling 3-4 (1-1.2-metre) beach break waves on offer at Port Macquarie today. And, the country’s best amateur surfers did their best to carve it up, with excellent scores being posted across multiple divisions.
Currumbin carver Mark ‘Richo’ Richardson didn’t let the supreme waves go to waste, jagging multiple high-scoring barrels in his round two over 35 men’s heat to easily progress through to semi-final contention.
After more than two decades carving up the Australian surfing landscape, Currumbin stalwart Richardson has decided to finally call it a day.
Part of the Gold Coast surfing fabric, Richo has made the tough call to retire from open competition at the end of this year in order to spend more time with his family.
But the 38-year old looked as young as ever in his round two heat, finishing with a two-wave total of 16.75 (including a 7.75 and a 9.00) to beat Bill Harrsion (NSW), Paul Buratowski (QLD) and Owen Crockett (QLD).
Former World Tour competitor Toby Martin (Dee Why) was in top form on the other end of the over 35 men’s draw, disposing of Scott Myers (NSW), Dave Matthews (VIC) and Con Paris (NSW) with a 12.25 total, which included a strong 8.25 ride. The blue ribbon open men’s division hit the water during the afternoon session, with 6 heats completed.
Also completed today were the 45 men requal heats, along with round two of the over 28 men. Contest organisers will reconvene at 6.30am tomorrow for the next call.

Celebrating the first recorded photographs of surfing in Australia in 1909 at Main Beach Yamba..
We were invited to be part of the celebrations & setup a staff to display our wares. heres a couple shots of the setup & an early morning surf check at Angourie Point.. unfortunatly a little small, too close to rock salad for our liking. Isaac & I wet a couple lines without more than a few tails lost from our soft plastics.. we opted for a oyster breakfast! Isaac managed enough for a morning oyster milkshake...

The Mystery Surfer

He’s a quietly spoken fella from the apple isle. You’ve seen him charging 20 foot Shipsterns – airing off the step, landing in the flats, riding out on the foam ball. What you may not know is that he shreds small waves and can thread left hand tubes like nobody’s business. His name is James Holmer-Cross and he is the mystery surfer in the Rip Curl Padang Cup 2010. We found JH-C checking the waves at Uluwatu and hit him up for a lil interview… cheers to waves mag for the Story in our team rider!

HAPPY CUSTOMER
I bought my first Diverse Surfboard about 3 years ago. It is a 6'2x18
1/4x2 1/4 rounded pin DS model. I was visiting family on
the Gold Coast and had a look between Surfers and Coolangatta for first
of all a good store that I felt comfortable that I could ask any silly
question and get constructive advice and a good selection of boards.
Well I found that store. I walked out fully decked out with board, bag,
fins, leggy and accessories for a good price.
I still have that board and have surfed it on the Goldy, all the way
down to South Coast NSW where I used to live. SW WA where it actually
handled Margaret River better then expected. I now currently live in
Perth and it even handles well in the ordinary beachies we predominately
get here.
I was back on the Gold Coast visiting my kids and family about 2 months
ago. I had a NW WA surf trip coming up and thought while I was here I
would see if i could find a suitable board to take there.
I was so happy with my 6'2 i thought I would see if I could get the same
shape but in a bigger board as I would’ve needed it up there.
With advice I was happy with I purchased a model DT
6'8x19x2 5/8 rounded pin. A beautiful looking board as it had been a
while since I had purchased a new board. I had a smile on my face for
weeks in anticipation of taking her for her first ride up North.
Always a bit dubious about the first wave, wandering how it will handle
I went straight on my first wave as I threw myself into a 6' wave on
this fantastic left hand break surfing on my backhand. I didn't mean to
go straight but I think it was a reaction to not knowing how the board
would handle. It handled fantastic. So smooth. I instantly gained
confidence with my new beast under my feet. And as the swell hung around
for the rest of our 8 day desert stay, I got to nurture my style in
perfect long left hand barreling waves and with a board under my feet
that gave me confidence. I am in anticipation for taking it to Margs.
If I had the money Id have one of every type of board you have. Maybe
when I get the mining job i'm after to pay for them.
Cheers for the great boards!!
Scott

Maldives Swell Journal June 6-24, 2010. |
Hello again from Hudhuran Fushi Island in the Maldives. We have enjoyed yet another great run of waves and weather. I'm sitting here sun-burnt, surfed out, and very, very satisfied, trying to find a different way to say that, once again the Maldives has delivered. It's been pumping! Our World Surfaris guests have surfed every day for as long as I can remember, though there were a couple of not so good days with small swell and bad weather back around June 9 and 10, but generally it has been a very good few weeks. The wind has been very light so we have been able to surf everywhere. The boats have been going North and South and scoring too many times to isolate individual sessions. The last swell built gradually - We had a week of it picking up daily from 2-3 ft sheet glass to 3-4ft to 4-6ft to an epic peak on June 18 and 19, now it's dropping off slowly. I find that guests are way more confident when the conditions improve slowly over a number of days, rather than going from shoulder high to double over-head over night. More than once I was told "that was the biggest/best wave of my life" by very happy guests. We have had a great group here this week, I must mention "the Zilla's" who managed to break out of the stereotype to such an extent that the Aussies wanted to surf every session with them. Also Poppie, from Snapper, who at 60yrs old was paddling into set waves up at Cokes. He was here with his son Dazza who had to leave a few days earlier than his old man. "you'll look after him aye, Rich?" he said to me during a session up at Cokes, I replied "no worries Dazza!" and promptly called the charging grandpa into one of the thickest sets of the day! Poppie made the air drop and made it to the channel in one piece, then paddled back out and gave me a roasting for not having been on the boat to get a photo! He's now known as "Air drop Pop" to all!! Inspirational stuff. |

Open Division Action Gets Underway on Day Two of Reef Bali Pro at Kuta Beach
23 June 2010, Kuta Beach-Bali: Round 1 and the first four heats of Round 2 were completed today in the Reef Bali Pro at Kuta Beach, as the highly anticipated increase in swell finally arrived resulting in glassy 3 foot waves for most of the morning.
Standouts during the morning's session included Kadek Murtika from Canggu, who found the head-high lefthanders coming in from the south very much to his liking, resulting in a Round 3 berth as his reward for taking first in his Round 1 and Round 2 heats.
The wave of the day honor belongs to a lucky Dewa Ardika from Kuta, who in the final minute of his Round 2 heat slotted into the only barrel of the morning and managed to find the doggy door, going from last place in the heat to second, thereby dodging an early exit and gaining himself a spot in the third round.
Of historical significance was the presence of Affan from the island of Sumba competing in his first ever Coca-Cola ISC event. The Rob Machado look-alike has been living and surfing in Bali for a while, but has never competed in a formal competition until today. Although he failed to advance into Round 2 with his third place finish in Round 1, he showed that he could surf with power and style so no doubt we will see more and better results from him in future Coca-Cola ISC events as his contest experience increases.
The contest organizers called a stop to the action at just after 11pm due to the low tide and strong wind conditions. Action will resume tomorrow morning at 6:30 am, with the higher tide and less wind setting things up for the remainder of Round 2 and at least the completion of Round 3. See attached heat draw for tomorrow's lineup.
You can follow the action on Facebook via Reef Indonesia and Indonesian Surfing Championship, and on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour Reef Bali Pro minisite at www.isctour.com/events/padma.
The Reef Bali Pro 2010 is sponsored by Reef Indonesia, Kawasaki, the Hard Rock Hotel and Centerstage, the Hard Rock Café, Hard Rock Radio, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Heineken, Optik Seis, Waterbom Bali, FHM, Surf Time Magazine, Lines Magazine, and sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.
